The body parts found in Purbachal Lake in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj have been identified as those of Jasimuddin Masum, a 59-year-old businessman, police confirmed. The victim’s family identified his remains at the Narayanganj General Hospital morgue last night.
Jasimuddin, a resident of Dhaka's Bashundhara residential area, went missing last Sunday. His elder son reported his disappearance at Gulshan Police Station the following day, according to Abdullah Al Masud, additional superintendent of police (crime) in Narayanganj.
Family members say Jasimuddin left his Bashundhara home Sunday afternoon in his car, leaving it in Gulshan, and told his driver he would travel to his dyeing factory in Narayanganj. He spoke with his wife on the phone around 11:00 p.m. that night, their last conversation. Jasimuddin’s younger son, Saiful Islam Sihab, said the family identified his body at the morgue after being informed by police.
"My father left with his car on Sunday afternoon, parked it in Gulshan, and mentioned he’d be going to Narayanganj in another vehicle," said Sihab. "He last spoke to my mother at 11:30 p.m., but when he didn’t come home, she tried calling his two numbers in the morning, which were both switched off."
The family is at a loss to explain the murder’s motive. "I don’t know of any conflicts my father had," Sihab added.
Additional SP Abdullah Al Masud reported a case has been filed with Rupganj Police Station, and police are following leads in an effort to apprehend those responsible.
According to police and local sources, a rickshaw puller noticed a foul smell near Purbachal Lake beside the 300-feet road yesterday morning. Upon investigation, locals discovered body parts in plastic bags and notified police, who recovered the remains.
However, two body parts remain missing, according to Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Liaqat Ali. "We suspect the murder occurred at least three days ago, with the body parts discarded in the lake inside three polybags."
