Increased Activity in Prison After Allegations Against Salman F. Rahman
Following the publication of reports about Salman F. Rahman, the head of Beximco Group and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's private sector industry and investment adviser, allegedly using a mobile phone in prison, the prison authorities have taken action. A search was conducted in the cells of VIP prisoners, including Salman, in the Dhaka Central Jail. During the search, Salman and several other prisoners expressed irritation. Salman reportedly said, "You are disturbing us."
A report published last Tuesday revealed that Salman F. Rahman had used a mobile phone to have a conversation with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Following this, prison authorities increased surveillance of VIP prisoners.
Restrictions on VIP Prisoners
After the search, the prison authorities imposed a ban on VIP prisoners conversing together. However, they are allowed to walk together, but they have been instructed not to engage in any anti-state discussions. A warning has been issued that any such discussions, if proven, will lead to punitive actions.
Strict instructions have been given to prevent the use of mobile phones or any other unauthorized facilities within the prison. According to prison sources, those violating the rules are being identified and disciplinary actions are being taken against them.
Challenges in Controlling VIP Prisoners
Prison expert Major (Retd.) Shamsul Haider Siddiqui stated that controlling influential prisoners is always difficult. While it is easier to punish regular prisoners for violations, the same rules do not apply to VIP prisoners. However, punishments such as transferring them to different prisons, revoking their privileges, or prohibiting family visits are possible.
He further mentioned that the prison authorities should assign a guard to monitor VIP prisoners while they walk together and keep track of their discussions. If any anti-state activities are suspected, they should be reported to the Inspector General of Prisons.
Current VIP Prisoners in Dhaka Central Jail
Currently, 68 VIP prisoners are housed in the Dhaka Central Jail, including former ministers, MPs, high-ranking officials, and influential personalities. Some of them include Anisul Haq, Rashed Khan Menon, Tipu Munshi, Junayed Ahmed Palak, among others.
