Workers of Doreen Fashion Limited and Beximco Industrial Park are staging protests by blocking the Chandra-Nabinagar road in the Zirani and Chakrabarti areas of Gazipur metropolis on Tuesday. The road blockade has halted vehicular movement on both sides, causing severe inconvenience to passengers and drivers. Many commuters are being forced to use alternative routes.
Speaking with workers and industrial police, it was learned that employees of Beximco Industrial Park began their fourth day of protests around 9:30 AM today, demanding their October salaries. The workers marched from the factory premises and occupied the Chandra-Nabinagar road in the Chakrabarti area, creating a blockade that led to massive traffic congestion on both sides of the road.
Arman Hossain, a worker at the Beximco factory, said, “Since August 5, we haven’t been receiving our salaries on time. We haven’t yet received our October salaries. It has become extremely difficult to manage household expenses without pay.” Another worker, Afzal Hossain, stated, “Our protest will continue until we are paid. Once we get our salaries, we will return to work.”
Due to the protests, authorities have announced indefinite closures of several factories in the Sarab and Zirani areas, including Doreen Fashion Limited. Workers of Doreen Fashion have been protesting since Monday, demanding the reopening of their factory. Although they dispersed around 11 PM last night, they resumed their protests this morning, blocking the road in the Zirani area.
Masud Mia, an operator at Doreen Fashion, said, “The factory was shut down indefinitely on November 1. Although it reopened last Sunday, it was closed again after midday. When workers tried to return to work yesterday morning, we found that the factory had been declared indefinitely closed. There have been no issues at our factory, so why has it been closed? This is why we are protesting to have it reopened.”
