In Chouddagram, Comilla, a freedom fighter was humiliated by having a shoe garland placed around his neck. This incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in front of the Kuliara Government Primary School in the Batisa Union of Chouddagram. Later, a video of the incident was circulated on social media.
The victim, Abdul Hai (78), a resident of Kuliara village, is a central committee member of the Krishak League and a former vice president of the Krishak League in Comilla South. His family has accused local Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir leaders and activists of being involved in the incident. They have also threatened him to leave the area.
In response, Mahfuzur Rahman, the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami in Chouddagram, said, "We cannot accept such an incident. We are looking into the matter and will take action against those responsible."
Local sources report that Abdul Hai had been away from the area for about eight years after being targeted for not supporting former Member of Parliament and ex-Railway Minister Mujibul Haque. His house had been attacked multiple times by Mujibul’s supporters. Recently, he had returned home. On Sunday afternoon, after leaving his house, he was intercepted by a group of people, taken to the Kuliara Government Primary School, and humiliated by having a shoe garland placed around his neck. The perpetrators filmed the incident and spread it on social media.
In the 1 minute and 46-second video, Abdul Hai is seen being dragged while wearing the shoe garland, repeatedly begging them to let him go. Following the incident, Abdul Hai became ill and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Feni.
His son, Golam Mustafa Bhuiyan, has stated that all the attackers were identified members of Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir, and they numbered more than 20 people. He also expressed frustration over the lack of action from the local police. "I called the OIC of Chouddagram police station at least five times, but he did not take any action. The OIC didn't even answer my calls after that. Where should we seek legal help?" he said.
