The High Court has acquitted BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, along with Abdul Salam, chairman of Ekushey Television, and two others, by dismissing the treason case filed against them.
The other two individuals involved in the case are former chief reporter Mahathir Faruki Khan and senior reporter Konok Sarwar from Ekushey Television.
On Thursday, the bench comprising Justice A.K.M. Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain issued the ruling.
Representing Tarique Rahman in court were advocates Joynul Abedin, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajol, Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sojal, Barrister Nasir Uddin Ashim, Advocate Zakir Hossain, Advocate Siddiq Ullah Mia, and Barrister Sanzida Siddiqi.
The court had framed charges in this case back in 2017. The case arose after Tarique Rahman's statement, given from London on January 5, 2015, was broadcast live by Ekushey TV. Following this, on January 6, 2015, the Tejgaon police sought permission from the Ministry of Home Affairs to file a treason case against Rahman and Salam. After obtaining the necessary approval, Sub-Inspector Borhan Uddin of Tejgaon Police Station registered the case on January 8, 2015. Following an investigation, Detective Inspector Emdadul Haque submitted the charge sheet to the court on September 6 last year, naming both Tarique Rahman and Abdul Salam, as well as Mahathir Faruki Khan and Konok Sarwar, as defendants.
