During the anti-discrimination student movement, a court has granted a three-day remand for former ICT State Minister Junayed Ahmed Polok in connection with the murder of Chhatra Dal leader Manik Mia, who was shot in the head in the capital's Chankharpul.
On Monday (December 9), after a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sefatullah issued the remand order. However, during the hearing, Polok's lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi requested that the remand be canceled, stating, "He cannot use a low commode; he needs a high commode."
Following this, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Sheikh Hadiuzzaman from Shahbagh Police Station, filed a petition for a seven-day remand. On behalf of the state, Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Farooq Faruqi argued in favor of granting remand. Polok's lawyer, Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, filed a bail petition requesting cancellation of the remand.
During the hearing, she said, "Polok has been arrested in 46 cases and was on remand for 31 days. On November 9, he was taken on remand in a case at Jatrabari Police Station. He became ill and was urgently admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. It was later discovered that he was suffering from back pain, and he is unable to travel. He cannot use a low commode; he needs a high commode. Despite being repeatedly remanded, no information has been uncovered. Considering his physical condition, I request that the remand be canceled. If necessary, he can be interrogated at the jail gate."
In response, Omar Farooq said, "Initially, we received a list showing that 1,581 people were killed during the anti-discrimination movement. There should be 1,581 cases against him. And whenever he appears in court, there is no end to his illness. When he’s outside, he has no hesitation in continuing his killing spree. More murder cases may be filed against him." The court then issued a three-day remand for Polok.
