The administration of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has temporarily suspended Professor Farid Ahmed of the Philosophy Department for referring to quota movement students as 'Razakars.' Additionally, Professor Bashir Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, has been relieved of his duties due to his stance against the movement.
On Tuesday (November 12), Acting Registrar Dr. ABM Azizur Rahman confirmed this information. Earlier, the decision was made during a syndicate meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan on Sunday (November 10).
During the movement on July 17, a WhatsApp group chat of the Bangabandhu Teachers’ Council was leaked. In the chat, Professor Zebunnessa of the Public Administration Department wrote, “Many of our teachers are injured. We are starving, and no one is checking on us.” In response, Professor Farid commented, “Wait a little longer. The defeat of the Razakars is near. The nation will move forward on the right path through your sacrifice. Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.”
It is known that on July 15, during an anti-discrimination movement at the university, students were injured in an attack by Chhatra League members, outsiders, and police. On September 29, Sajjadul Islam, an English Department student, filed a case at Ashulia Police Station regarding this incident. The case named two former vice-chancellors, the proctor, and 14 others, with a total of 214 individuals, including unknown persons. Professor Farid Ahmed was the 8th accused in the case. On October 4, a group of students detained him at Jagannath University campus and handed him over to the police. He was subsequently shown arrested in Sajjadul's case and sent to court.
Meanwhile, multiple syndicate members reported that since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled on August 5, Professor Bashir Ahmed had not participated in any academic or administrative activities in the faculty. To ensure smooth faculty operations, the syndicate recommended his release from the dean position under Section 8(2) of the University Act of 1973, and Professor Shamsul Alam of the Department of Government and Politics was appointed as the acting dean.
