Legal advisor Asif Nazrul stated that the interim government has begun its journey toward elections. He mentioned that a search committee has already been formed to establish the Election Commission, aiming for an exceptional election this time, with an updated voter list. He made these remarks during a conversation with journalists on Tuesday, October 29.
He further added that the leader of the Awami League is issuing terrorist threats from abroad. After carrying out mass atrocities, people will have to consider whether this party should still have the right to engage in politics. Emphasizing justice over revenge, the legal advisor said that in the meeting, the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, Volker Türk, stressed the importance of human rights and strengthening the Human Rights Commission. Discussions also included the possibility of abolishing the death penalty, with human rights organizations committed to providing legal support.
At the same time, UN Human Rights Commissioner Türk stated that the rule of law and human rights issues were discussed, highlighting their interconnection. The current government’s various reform initiatives were reviewed to ensure human rights are upheld. A fact-finding committee is investigating the mass atrocities of July, and the UN headquarters is closely monitoring the entire matter.
