Former NBR Member Matiur Rahman and His First Wife Laila Kaniz Arrested Over the 'Goat Incident'

The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) has arrested former National Board of Revenue (NBR) member Matiur Rahman and his first wife, former Upazila Chairman Laila Kaniz.

The information was confirmed today, Wednesday, by Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

According to the DMP, Matiur Rahman and Laila Kaniz were arrested from the Bashundhara area in the capital. The couple is facing multiple cases. Most recently, on January 6, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed separate cases against Matiur Rahman, his first wife Laila Kaniz, their son Toufiqur Rahman, and their daughter Farzana Rahman, accusing them of acquiring illegal assets and concealing wealth information.

Earlier, on December 15 of the previous year, the ACC also filed two separate cases against Matiur Rahman and his second wife, Shammi Akhtar Shibli.

The controversy began during last year’s Eid-ul-Adha when Matiur’s son, Mushfiqur Rahman Iffat, went viral on social media for purchasing a "high-breed" goat for 1.5 million taka. This incident brought public attention to the family’s lavish lifestyle and wealth.

Details of the family’s assets, including luxury cars, resorts, bungalows, shooting spots, and significant properties under both named and unnamed ownership, began surfacing. Consequently, on June 23, the ACC launched an investigation into Matiur Rahman and his family, and on June 25, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) ordered the freezing of their bank accounts, mobile financial service accounts, and beneficiary owner (BO) accounts in the stock market.
