Several students of Dhaka University have alleged that they faced harassment from outsiders attending the Islamic convention. The victims shared their experiences on Facebook. The convention, organized by Olama Mashayekh Bangladesh, began on Tuesday (November 5) at 9 AM.
A large number of attendees gathered at Suhrawardy Udyan and surrounding areas to attend the event. Ania Fahmin, an anthropology student at DU, wrote on her Facebook, “I don’t understand how campus security remains unaffected despite the harassment of girls coming to and from the faculty.” In a comment on her post, someone named Nujia Hasin Rasha wrote, "People are moral policing boys and girls on the streets regarding their clothing."When asked about the situation, Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, "We are trying to bring the situation under control, but managing such a large crowd is challenging. We imposed restrictions on vehicle movement around the campus since last night, but the situation remains unresolved."
Meanwhile, people began gathering in Suhrawardy Udyan and nearby areas early in the morning to participate in the convention. Parking of vehicles around the event venue had caused severe traffic jams, inconveniencing numerous students and office-goers. In some streets, cars were moving very slowly, while traffic movement in Shahbagh had virtually come to a standstill.
