The country's highest court has decided to temporarily suspend the bail of Sohel Rana, the owner of Rana Plaza, following the tragic incident in Savar that took the lives of 1,134 people. Given the sensitivity and controversy surrounding Sohel Rana's bail in the murder case filed over this disaster, in which over a thousand people died and many were injured, the Appellate Division has issued an order to stay the bail previously granted by the High Court. On Monday, a three-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by senior Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam, issued this directive.
Along with this, the Appellate Division has instructed the High Court to settle the rule regarding Sohel Rana's bail within two months, so the trial process can progress promptly. Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir represented Sohel Rana in court, while Additional Attorney General Arshadul Rauf argued on behalf of the state.
Notably, on April 24, 2013, the collapse of Rana Plaza in Savar, which resulted in the deaths of over a thousand people, caused a nationwide outcry and received significant criticism internationally. Many garment factory workers lost their lives under the rubble of the building. Following the incident, Sohel Rana was charged and faced trial. On October 2, the Chamber Court suspended Sohel Rana’s bail and referred the matter to the Appellate Division. This stay order by the Appellate Division is considered crucial for ensuring an effective and impartial judicial process.
