In response to the public appearance of three leaders from the Islamic Chhatra Shibir at Jahangirnagar University, a midnight protest march took place on campus. A group of progressive students initiated the march at around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday night from the university's Bot Tola area. The procession traveled along several campus roads and concluded at the Shaheed Minar, where a brief assembly was held.
The assembly was led by Noor-e-Tamim, a student from the Anthropology department. Addressing the gathering, Faiza Mehjabin, a student from Urban and Regional Planning, stated, “Jamaat-Shibir was an ally in the genocide of 1971. Just as Sheikh Hasina’s government bears the responsibility for civilian deaths in the 24th uprising, Jamaat-Shibir carries the bloodstains of the ’71 genocide—this is a burden they cannot deny. In the 1980s, Chhatra Shibir also engaged in terrorism on campus. After suppressing free-minded students, they are now once again attempting rehabilitation.” Questioning Shibir’s political rights, Sohagi Samia, an organizer from the Socialist Student Front at the university, said, “Those who opposed the Liberation War in 1971 should not be engaging in politics in independent Bangladesh in 2024. The constitution advocates for secularism; therefore, student organizations should not engage in politics based on religion.”
Amartya Roy, president of a faction of the Student Union's university branch, remarked, “Chhatra Shibir has never protested against rising prices or worker killings. They are always focused on divisive politics. Any organization with blood on its hands must go through justice—be it social or legal—if they wish to engage in politics. They must apologize to the 14,000 students on this campus before setting foot here.”
After approximately 35 years, around 11:30 p.m. last night, three Shibir leaders made a public appearance on campus, calling for a healthy political environment with participation from all groups. In a statement signed by Abdullah Al Mamun Sakir, the publicity secretary of the Jahangirnagar University branch of Shibir, the remarks of branch president Harunur Rashid Rafi and general secretary Mohibur Rahman Muhib were also mentioned.
