After a long wait, BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia will leave for London tonight for advanced medical treatment. She will depart from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 10 PM on a special air ambulance sent by the Amir of Qatar, headed towards London, UK. Upon arrival at Heathrow Airport, she will be received by her eldest son and BNP's acting chairman Tarique Rahman, along with other family members. It will be the first reunion between mother and son after over five years. A large number of BNP leaders and activists will be present at the airport to welcome their beloved leader.
Upon arriving in London, Begum Khaleda Zia will be admitted to the prestigious ‘London Clinic,’ an advanced healthcare center. This was confirmed by her personal physician and a member of BNP's standing committee, Professor Dr. A Z M Zahid Hossain, during a press conference in Dhaka. The 79-year-old Begum Zia has been suffering from various complex health issues, including liver cirrhosis, heart disease, and kidney problems. Dr. Zahid Hossain mentioned, "All the formalities will be completed, and then, tonight at 10 PM, InshaAllah, she will depart from Shahjalal International Airport, heading for Doha and then on to Heathrow International Airport in London."
The Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, knowing about the physical condition of the former Prime Minister, has provided a royal air ambulance for her journey. The special air ambulance from Qatar landed at Shahjalal International Airport at 7:40 PM yesterday.
Professor Dr. Zahid explained that the London Clinic is a well-established and renowned hospital under NHS, where Begum Zia will be admitted. From Heathrow International Airport, she will be directly transferred to the clinic. The royal air ambulance from Qatar will carry four Qatari doctors and paramedics, along with six members of Khaleda Zia's medical board. These include Professor Dr. Shahabuddin Talukdar, Professor Dr. FM Siddique, Professor Nuruddin Ahmed, Dr. Zafar Iqbal, Professor A Z M Zahid Hossain, and Dr. Mohammad Al Mamun.
Additionally, Begum Zia will be accompanied by her younger daughter-in-law Syeda Sharmila Rahman, party advisor Enamul Haque Chowdhury, BNP executive committee member Tabith Awal, and her personal secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, along with a few other personal staff members.
Request for the nation’s prayers: Dr. Zahid expressed gratitude to all those who have prayed for Begum Zia’s health and well-being, and on behalf of the party, he thanked everyone who had prayed, regardless of their faith. "Madam has thanked everyone, the party has expressed gratitude, and our Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has also thanked them. We all pray that Madam will recover from her upcoming treatment and return to us with Allah's grace," he said. The family has also requested prayers from the public.
Medical treatment in London: Dr. Zahid further explained that Begum Zia has several physical complications. While some treatments have been administered in the country for her liver cirrhosis, more advanced treatment plans are in place. Begum Zia had several blockages in her heart, and the necessary treatments were provided to save her life at that time, but there are additional blockages that need to be addressed. Furthermore, she requires treatment for other complex conditions that have arisen after COVID-19. "The services provided by the doctors and nurses at Evercare Hospital have been satisfactory," he noted.
"We do not know how tomorrow's journey will go. The trip was delayed earlier due to her health condition. We are taking Madam to a multidisciplinary advanced center in London, and after assessing her, the doctors there will decide on the next steps," Dr. Zahid added. When asked about treatment in the United States, he mentioned that if the London clinic recommends taking her to Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the possibility of traveling to the US will be considered. As for the possibility of Begum Zia performing Umrah in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Zahid said that she is interested, but it depends on Allah's will. "After all the hardship and suffering, she wishes to perform Umrah. If Allah permits, she will go at some point," he said.
Prayers from the nation: BNP's National Standing Committee meeting was held to pray for the health of the party chairperson, Begum Khaleda Zia, and to discuss the party’s course of action in the current political situation.
