Under the 45th Japanese ODA loan package (first batch), Japan will provide a total of 39,902 million Japanese yen (approximately 248.88 million USD) for the "Jamuna Railway Bridge Construction Project (Third Installment)" and the "Chittagong Sewerage System Development Project (Engineering Services)."
On Monday, November 25, in the NEC-2 conference room of the Economic Relations Division (ERD) in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, the "Exchange of Notes" and "Loan Agreement" were signed between the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Government of Japan. ERD Secretary Md. Shahriar Kader Siddique signed the "Exchange of Notes" and the "Loan Agreement" on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh, while Japan's Ambassador to Bangladesh, Mr. Kiminori Iwama, signed the "Exchange of Notes," and Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh Office, Mr. Tomohide Ichiguchi, signed the "Loan Agreement" on behalf of the Japanese government.
According to the ERD press release, the Jamuna Railway Bridge Construction Project (Third Installment) has a total cost of 16,780.96 crore taka (with Bangladesh government contributing 4,631.76 crore taka and JICA providing 12,149.20 crore taka). The project's implementation period is from July 2016 to December 2025. Japan has already provided 128,697 million Japanese yen for this project.
Under the third installment, Japan will provide 38,206 million Japanese yen (approximately 237.68 million USD / approximately 2,946.73 crore taka). The interest rate for this installment will be 1.70% for construction, 0.40% for consulting services, and a one-time front-end fee of 0.20%. The loan repayment period is 30 years, with a 10-year grace period.
ERD also mentioned that for the Chittagong Sewerage System Development Project (Engineering Services), the objective is to improve the sewerage system in the city through the development of sewage treatment plants, pumping stations, and pipelines in catchments 2 and 4, thereby improving the quality of life, sanitary conditions, and contributing to the preservation of the aquatic environment. The total cost of the project is 5,152.56 crore taka (with Bangladesh government contributing 581.57 crore taka, JICA providing 4,144.28 crore taka, and CWASA providing 39 crore taka). The implementation period for this project is from January 2025 to December 2032.
