In the New Market police station area of the capital, during the remand hearing of former minister Kamrul Islam in the case of businessman Abdul Wadud's murder, his son Dr. Tanzir Islam Adit was standing near the courtroom. This sparked some tension. BNP-aligned lawyers started criticizing the presence of Dr. Tanzir near the courtroom during the proceedings. He later left the area.

On Tuesday (November 19), Kamrul Islam was presented before Dhaka’s Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Ziadur Rahman, where a 10-day remand was requested. Afterward, the defense lawyers sought to cancel the remand and requested bail. On the other hand, the prosecution opposed the bail request. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail and granted an 8-day remand.

Earlier, on Monday night, Kamrul Islam was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police from Sector 12 in Uttara, Dhaka.

The case alleges that on July 19 at 5 pm, businessman Abdul Wadud was shot and killed in front of gate 1 of New Market. A murder case has been filed against 130 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader. The case was filed by Abdul Wadud’s brother-in-law, Abdur Rahman, at New Market Police Station on August 21.

Kamrul Islam contested the 2008 general elections as the Awami League’s candidate for the Dhaka-2 constituency, winning the seat. In 2014, he was re-elected unopposed as a Member of Parliament. In the 2018 general elections, he was re-elected again. From 2008 to 2014, he served as the State Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs in the Bangladesh government. From February 12, 2014, he was appointed as the Minister of Food. He is currently a Presidium member of the Bangladesh Awami League.
