In Mohammadpur, Dhaka, the law enforcement agencies are concealing the whereabouts of five out of eleven arrested individuals involved in a robbery at a businessman’s house, where the perpetrators posed as a joint task force. Despite 57 hours having passed since their arrest (as of last night at 10 PM), these five suspects have not yet been presented in court, although there is a legal requirement to do so within 24 hours of arrest. Meanwhile, the remaining six suspects are being interrogated under remand by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB).
Lt. Colonel Munim Ferdous, director of RAB’s legal and media branch, informed Prothom Alo on Tuesday evening that seven out of the eight arrested individuals have been handed over to the police, while one is still in RAB custody for questioning. However, Mohammad Rakib Khan, additional deputy commissioner of the DB’s Cyber and Special Crime Division, stated at night that among the six individuals in DB custody, three were transferred from RAB.
On Sunday, Lt. Colonel Munim Ferdous had informed Prothom Alo that eight people were arrested in connection with the robbery in Mohammadpur, five of whom are former members of various law enforcement agencies.
RAB has indicated that they are conducting a joint investigation with the army, and the army has not yet agreed to make any comments.
The robbery occurred last Friday night at the house of businessman Abu Bakar in the Beribandh area of Mohammadpur, where 7.5 million taka and 70 bhori of gold were stolen. Abu Bakar has filed a case with the Mohammadpur police regarding the incident.
Multiple sources from law enforcement have reported that at least 20 individuals have been identified as being involved in the robbery, including members from various agencies.
Additionally, it has been revealed that following the fall of the Awami League government, a robbery gang has emerged that includes both current and former members of law enforcement and common criminals. The robbers approached people posing as law enforcement officials, armed with heavy weapons, with the intent to steal cash and gold.
A source from the DB has stated that they are searching for an individual involved in the distribution of the stolen money and jewelry.
