Former BNP Member of Parliament for the Jhenaidah-4 (part of Kaliganj and Sadar) constituency, M. Shahiduzzaman (known as Beltu), has passed away (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji'un). He took his last breath at around 11:45 PM on Monday at Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital. His death was confirmed by Munshi Kamal Azad, Vice President of the Jhenaidah District BNP.
Shahiduzzaman, 78, had been suffering from heart disease and various health complications. He leaves behind his wife and two children. He held the positions of Vice President of the Jhenaidah District BNP and President of the Kaliganj Upazila BNP, and he was also a member of the central executive committee of the BNP.
Mahbubar Rahman, the convener of the Kaliganj Upazila BNP, stated that after the funeral prayers in Jhenaidah and Kaliganj towns, as well as his native village Dhopadih, Shahiduzzaman would be laid to rest in the family graveyard.
Shahiduzzaman was initially involved in student politics with the Student Union before joining the Jatiya Party. After the fall of the Ershad government, he joined the BNP ahead of the national elections in 1991. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Jhenaidah-4 constituency and served continuously as an MP for four consecutive terms until 2001.
