Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has proposed a two-day ceasefire to facilitate discussions on ending the conflict in the besieged Palestinian territory of Gaza. The proposal outlines that, should a ceasefire occur, Hamas will release four hostages, while Israel will reciprocate by freeing several Palestinian prisoners. This proposal was presented by the Egyptian president on Sunday, as reported by various international media outlets, including Al Jazeera, Deccan Chronicle, and AFP.
President al-Sisi noted that the proposal includes the release of certain Palestinian prisoners and the provision of humanitarian assistance to the beleaguered Gaza Strip. The aim is to establish a pathway toward implementing a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza.
However, al-Sisi did not clarify whether this proposal has been presented to Hamas, the governing authority in Gaza, or to Israel.
In a press conference held in Cairo, al-Sisi explained that during this two-day ceasefire, Hamas would release four Israeli hostages, and in return, Israel would free a specified number of Palestinian prisoners from its jails. Following this, a comprehensive ceasefire would be negotiated within the next ten days.
As of now, neither Israel nor Hamas has issued any official statements regarding al-Sisi's plan.
Nevertheless, a Palestinian official familiar with Egypt's efforts expressed optimism to Reuters, stating that he believes Hamas will agree to the plan. He added that any agreement would require Israel to completely halt its attacks and withdraw its troops from Gaza.
This proposal comes at a time when Israel is continuing its relentless assaults on Palestinian territories. Additionally, it has engaged in conflicts with Hezbollah in Lebanon and recently conducted airstrikes against Iran.
It is worth mentioning that negotiations aimed at achieving a long-term ceasefire between Hamas and Israel have repeatedly stalled. Hamas insists that Israeli forces must withdraw from Gaza as a precondition, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asserted that they will remain until Hamas is dismantled.
