Corruption allegations in Bangladesh: UK officials have spoken with Tulip Siddiq.

UK Labour Party minister Tulip Siddiq has been questioned by officials from the UK Cabinet Office about allegations of financial misconduct involving her and her family members.

Siddiq, who serves as the UK’s Minister for the City, is accused of embezzling £4 billion through a nuclear power plant construction deal, in which four of her family members are allegedly involved. This is part of an ongoing investigation in Bangladesh regarding the matter.

On Sunday, it was revealed that the Cabinet Office’s ethics and standards team had conducted an interview with Tulip Siddiq about the allegations. This followed reports that Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) might also question her. The Cabinet Office’s inquiry comes in the wake of the Bangladesh investigation.

The ACC had launched an investigation last week into corruption allegations against Siddiq (42), her mother Sheikh Rehana (69), and her aunt Sheikh Hasina (77). Sheikh Hasina, a former prime minister of Bangladesh, was ousted from office in August after serving for 15 years.

The Bangladesh High Court had instructed the ACC to look into these allegations. The case stems from claims that Siddiq and her family used fake companies and Malaysian bank accounts to launder £4 billion from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.

Following the emergence of these allegations, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly expressed his support for Tulip Siddiq. The Prime Minister’s Office at 10 Downing Street affirmed that Starmer has full confidence in Siddiq, who will continue her duties as Minister for the City.

In a statement to The Telegraph, Siddiq denied any involvement in the embezzlement and stated that no authorities had contacted her regarding the accusations. The UK Labour Party has described the allegations as "false," asserting that they are politically motivated by opponents of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

The Mail on Sunday reported that investigators are gathering "documentary evidence" concerning Siddiq and others. In the coming weeks, they may send letters to Siddiq and others involved, asking them to provide statements. The ACC will send these letters via the UK High Commission in Dhaka.

Unnamed sources told the newspaper that if the investigators receive responses from the individuals concerned, they will assess whether to file an initial report (FIR) against them. If an FIR is filed, Siddiq could become a potential suspect, and Bangladeshi police would have the authority to arrest her.

An official from the ACC said, “The investigation is still in the inquiry phase. Once completed, we will send letters to all individuals involved, and Tulip Siddiq will be called in for questioning.” Akhtar Hossain, the ACC’s Director General for Prevention, confirmed that the letter would provide Siddiq and her family members the opportunity to present their side of the story.

Among Siddiq’s ministerial duties is addressing financial fraud and corruption in the UK. If she fails to cooperate with the investigation in Bangladesh, it could jeopardize the UK government’s recent commitment to help Bangladesh recover stolen assets. The UK has recently promised to assist Bangladesh in retrieving funds stolen by officials from Sheikh Hasina's government.

In October, investigators from the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) visited Bangladesh to support the country's anti-corruption efforts. A Conservative Party MP has since written to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, urging an inquiry into the allegations against Siddiq.
