South Korea’s Impeached President Yoo Suk-Yeol Arrested
South Korea’s impeached president, Yoo Suk-Yeol, has been arrested. BBC reported on Wednesday that investigators faced several challenges during his arrest. Initially, the President’s security forces (Presidential Security Service – PSS) thwarted their efforts. However, after a second attempt, the authorities were successful in apprehending him.
This marks the second attempt to arrest Yoo in this month. Earlier in the month, an operation was conducted at his residence, but it was unsuccessful due to resistance from security forces. Eventually, the authorities succeeded on their second attempt.
On December 3, Yoo Suk-Yeol surprised everyone by declaring martial law in South Korea. However, under intense public protest and pressure, he was forced to retract the order within just six hours. On December 14, the parliament impeached him, and he was temporarily removed from office.
Yoo has been accused of serious charges including treason and abuse of power. Although he was called in for questioning as part of the investigation, he refused to appear in court. Consequently, on December 31, the South Korean court issued an arrest warrant against him. After the expiration of the initial warrant, investigators extended its validity.
Following Yoo’s arrest, his supporters have gathered in front of the presidential residence to protest. They believe the charges against him are politically motivated. However, investigators argue that the action was crucial for upholding the rule of law.
