RAJSHAHI, Oct 29, 2024 (BSS) – Speakers at a participatory meeting emphasized that a unified effort from both government and non-government organizations is essential for the welfare of climate-induced internal migrants. The increasing number of internal migrants due to the adverse impacts of climate change calls for collective action to address the needs of those affected.
This observation was made during a project inception meeting held at the office conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) today.
The meeting was organized by the Association for Community Development (ACD) under its project titled “Fostering Resilience and Community Engagement for Internal Migrant Workers and Families,” with support from Peoples’ Courage International.
ACD Director Sharmin Subrina welcomed the participants, and Anika Azhar, Country Coordinator of Peoples’ Courage International, presented a short documentary outlining the project’s context. Project Coordinator Mashiur Rahman also provided an overview of the project’s goals, objectives, and implementation strategy.
The project aims to build resilience, improve livelihoods, and enhance security for internal migrants. It will be implemented in four upazilas of Rajshahi and Joypurhat districts, as well as Chattogram City Corporation, in collaboration with the government, civil society, and local communities. The initiative aims to support around 3,000 households affected by climate change.
The project seeks to foster a supportive social environment for internal migrants by strengthening the capacities of community-based organizations. Ultimately, it will promote multi-stakeholder engagement to identify and advocate for social security services for migrants.
