Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus stated that access to loans is a fundamental right, as it is closely tied to people's livelihood. In order to establish the right to livelihood, the right to access loans must be ensured. He made this remark while speaking at a side-event of the COP-29 Climate Conference held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Tuesday. The event, titled "A Global Dialogue: Financing Options for Small Farmers," was jointly organized by Bangladesh and the Netherlands at the Bangladesh pavilion at the conference.
Dr. Yunus, known as the father of microfinance, emphasized the importance of loans for farmers, saying, "If a farmer is given access to a loan, he can buy crops from other farmers and sell them, thereby improving his standard of living." He further added, "To make loans more accessible to farmers, banking systems should be restructured by following the Grameen Bank model in different countries."
