In the highly publicized murder case of his wife, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, in Chattogram, former police superintendent (SP) Babul Akter has been granted bail by the High Court.

The order was issued on Wednesday by the bench of Justice Md. Atowar Rahman and Justice Ali Reza.

It is reported that on June 5, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was killed in a shooting and stabbing by unidentified assailants on Nizam Road in Chattogram while she was taking her son to the school bus. The incident gained widespread attention across the country. At the time of the incident, Mitu's husband, then-Superintendent of Police Babul Akter, was in Dhaka. Upon returning to Chattogram, he filed a murder case against unidentified individuals at the Panchlaish police station.

However, during the investigation, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) revealed that Babul Akter himself was involved in the murder of his wife. On May 12, 2021, the PBI submitted the final report for the earlier case. On the same day, Mitu's father, former police inspector Mosharraf Hossain, filed a second case at the Panchlaish police station, naming Babul Akter as the prime accused. Following this, PBI arrested Babul Akter and sent him to court. He has been in jail since then.

Meanwhile, on October 14, 2021, Babul's lawyer filed a petition to reject the final report submitted by the PBI in the first case. In response, the court ordered further investigation into the case on November 3, 2021, rejecting both the petition and the PBI's report.

The PBI continued to investigate both cases. Subsequently, on January 25, 2022, a final report was submitted for the case filed by Mitu's father. After further investigation, a charge sheet was filed against Babul Akter and six others in the first case on September 13, 2022.
