The Tragic Fate of Kudduz and Sujon: Victims of Human Trafficking in Madaripur
Kudduz Bepari (33), from Rajair Upazila in Madaripur, was working in Malaysia. Six months ago, he returned home on leave and fell into the trap of a local broker named Monir. Tempted by Monir’s promises, he decided to travel to Italy illegally. A “body contract” worth 16 lakh taka was made for the journey through Libya and across the Mediterranean to reach Italy.
Libya is one of the key illegal routes to Europe. Small boats overloaded with passengers attempt to cross the Mediterranean, often leading to tragic deaths. Brokers have introduced the "body contract," which guarantees the migrant’s safe arrival in Italy, regardless of how long it takes.
To pay Monir, Kudduz sold two bighas of land worth 40 lakh taka, registering it in the name of Monir’s wife, Hamida Begum. Monir first sent Kudduz to Egypt and then to Libya. On January 24, Kudduz was sent from Libya's Benghazi coast toward Italy on a boat. However, just hours into the journey, the boat capsized in the Mediterranean.
Kudduz’s brother-in-law, Sujon Hawlader, also paid Monir 16 lakh taka to make the same journey. Sujon was among those confirmed dead in the tragic accident. Sujon’s wife, Munni Begum, said, “We borrowed 16 lakh taka to pay Monir. The deal was to safely deliver Sujon to Italy. But they abandoned him mid-sea and let him die. How will I survive now? Who will feed my children?”
Monir Sheikh, now known locally as "Mafia Monir," is part of a human trafficking network. His sons-in-law in Libya are linked to organized trafficking groups. Monir’s wife has reportedly purchased properties worth 5 crore taka in the last seven months. After the bodies of 23 victims washed ashore in Libya, Monir and his family have gone into hiding.
