Recently, legendary footballer Kazi Salahuddin and Bangladesh's most successful cricketer Shakib Al Hasan have been removed from the country's textbooks. This change has been made in the seventh-grade "English for Today" book under the section on sports.
In 2013, a chapter titled 'Games and Sports' featuring eight famous sports personalities from around the world was included in the seventh-grade English book. Apart from Shakib and Salahuddin, the legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was also mentioned. However, in the new version, the names of these three have been removed, and instead, the names of current national football team captain Jamal Bhuiyan, women's cricket team captain Nigar Sultana Jyoti, and chess player Rani Hamid have been added.
The previous 'Games and Sports' chapter featured the names of eight sports personalities, including Brazilian football legend Pele, Argentina's great Diego Maradona, West Indies' batting star Brian Lara, India's Sachin Tendulkar, U.S. tennis star Serena Williams, Bangladesh's mountaineer Nishat Mujumdar, cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, and former footballer Kazi Salahuddin.
Additionally, separate chapters on Shakib and Salahuddin have also been removed from the textbooks. Despite having no political involvement, Salahuddin had a close relationship with the family of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. On the other hand, Shakib Al Hasan is regarded as the most successful cricketer in Bangladesh's cricket history. He became involved in politics during his playing career and was elected as a Member of Parliament from Magura-1 constituency under the nomination of the Awami League in 2018. However, due to the current political situation, Shakib has been unable to return to the country, and several cases have been filed against him.
