The city of Los Angeles in the United States has been burning under devastating wildfires for six consecutive days. The death toll from the fires rose to 24 as of yesterday, Sunday, local time. The situation remains out of control, with officials warning that increasing gusty winds could further spread the flames.
The wildfires have turned large parts of the United States' second-largest city into rubble. Thousands of people have lost their homes and are left in a state of despair. Despite extensive efforts to control the fire since it began last Tuesday, the situation remains dire.
Firefighters are working tirelessly to contain the Palisades wildfire, which is spreading toward densely populated areas like Brentwood and the San Fernando Valley. However, the National Weather Service has warned that wind speeds could exceed 110 kilometers per hour by early Tuesday, potentially worsening the situation.
Anthony Marrone, chief of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, said they have received additional equipment and personnel to combat the fire and are prepared for the challenges ahead. However, Sheriff Robert Luna fears the death toll could rise further as trained dogs are being used to search for bodies.
Meanwhile, incidents of looting have been reported in wildfire-affected areas. Several individuals have been arrested, including one who was disguised as a firefighter. Authorities have extended nighttime curfews in evacuated areas and requested the deployment of the National Guard to strengthen security.
In response to the crisis, newly elected President Donald Trump criticized California officials for their inability to manage the wildfires. “This is one of the biggest disasters in our country’s history, and they still can’t put out the fire. What’s their problem?” Trump stated on the Truth Social platform.
However, firefighters have been working around the clock since the fires began, and additional personnel from Mexico have joined the efforts, further boosting firefighting operations.
