Russia has captured a second town in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region within a week, as part of a prolonged offensive that shows no signs of slowing down. Ukraine’s general staff has reported more than 150 daily assaults across the front lines.
The Russian Ministry of Defence announced that its troops have taken control of Hrodivka, a town on the route to Pokrovsk, which Ukrainian commanders identify as a key target. Russian forces entered Hrodivka in early September, just five days after capturing Vuhledar, located on the Donetsk-Zaporizhia border.
Meanwhile, Russia’s air campaign continues aggressively. “This daily aerial terror can be stopped,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, urging allies to provide Ukraine with Western-supplied missiles capable of targeting Russian airfields used for launching glide bombs from Tupolev-95 bombers.
Russia has issued warnings about severe consequences if its allies enable Ukraine to strike deep within Russian territory. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated this on Tuesday, saying, “As soon as this decision is made, if it is made, we will know about it, and the plan that [Russian President] Vladimir Putin mentioned will already be in effect.”
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for unity among partners and access to long-range weapons. He also reported that Russia dropped 800 glide bombs and deployed nearly 400 drones and 20 missiles into Ukraine last week.
