Naim Qassem, the deputy leader of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, has expressed his support for efforts by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, an ally of Hezbollah, to halt the fighting with Israel.
It remains uncertain whether this indicates a shift in Hezbollah's position after a year during which the group has maintained that it is fighting in support of Palestinians in war-torn Gaza and will not cease its actions without a ceasefire.
"In any case, once the ceasefire issue is resolved and diplomacy can facilitate it, all other details can be discussed and decisions made," Qassem stated. "If the enemy [Israel] continues its war, the battlefield will ultimately determine the outcome."
His 30-minute televised address took place 11 days after the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, representing one of the most significant blows Israel has dealt to the group in decades. Another prominent Hezbollah leader, Hashem Safieddine, who is viewed as a potential successor to Nasrallah, has not been publicly heard from since an Israeli airstrike late last week
