A tragic incident occurred in New York City’s subway, where a woman lost her life after her clothes were set on fire by a man. The incident happened on Sunday morning, and police believe the woman was asleep at the time. A suspect has already been arrested in connection with the incident.
The identity of the victim is yet to be determined.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. local time at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station in Brooklyn. The woman was seated motionless inside a subway train when an unidentified man calmly approached her and used a lighter to ignite her clothing. There was no prior interaction or argument between the two, and police do not believe they knew each other.
Police officers patrolling the station quickly rushed to the scene, but the suspect had already exited the train.
A witness shared a video on social media showing a man wearing a gray hoodie sitting on a bench a few steps away from where the woman was burning. The suspect arrested later was wearing a similar outfit. However, police stated that the individual did not appear suspicious at the time, as their priority was to assist the victim.
The police used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames, but emergency responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident while still on the subway. However, the motive behind the attack and the identity of the victim remain under investigation.
