A day before the US election, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed Arab-American voters in East Lansing, Michigan, where she promised an end to the war in Gaza. "This year has been difficult, devastating due to the level of death and destruction in Gaza and civilian casualties in Lebanon. As president, I am committed to ending the war in Gaza, bringing back the hostages, ending Gaza's suffering, ensuring the security of Israel, and the dignity, freedom, security and self-determination of the Palestinian people. "I will use all my power to secure those rights," Harris said at a rally in Michigan, home to two hundred thousand Arab-Americans.
This statement marked a shift from his position in August 2024, when Harris expressed strong support for Israeli military action. In his first interview as the Democratic nominee, he said, "My support for Israel's defense and its ability to defend itself is steadfast and unwavering, and that will not change."
Harris did not offer specifics on how to end the conflict in Gaza. The United States is still Israel's largest military supplier, and in August Harris flatly dismissed the possibility of a US arms embargo on Israel, saying, "I say today, Israel has a right to defend itself. We will do it, and it's important how it's done."
