On Tuesday, Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Apurba Jahangir stated that the interim government endorsed Law Adviser Asif Nazrul's assertion that President Mohammed Shahabuddin lied about the resignation letter of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“The government concurs with Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul's earlier remarks regarding the President… no decision has been made yet concerning the President's removal,” he mentioned during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
Present at the briefing were Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Assistant Press Secretaries Nayem Ali and Shuchismita Tithi.
Shahabuddin’s comments about Hasina's resignation were made in an interview with Manab Zamin Chief Editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, which appeared in the daily’s political magazine "Janatar Chokh" on Sunday. The article quoted the President as claiming there was no documentary proof of Hasina's resignation.
Dr. Asif Nazrul pointed out on Monday that the President's statements were self-contradictory, noting, “He previously stated during a national address on August 5 that he had accepted the former Prime Minister’s resignation letter. By claiming he doesn’t possess it now, the President has contradicted himself.”
The Law Adviser explained that the President sought the Supreme Court’s opinion under Article 106 of the Constitution to navigate the situation that arose on August 5. Subsequently, the Chief Justice and other judges of the Appellate Division provided their opinion, which began with acknowledging that the Prime Minister had resigned due to the prevailing circumstances in the country.
He added that the reference included signatures from all Appellate Division judges, including former Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan.
Meanwhile, students protested outside Bangabhaban and at the Shahbagh intersection, demanding President Mohammed Shahabuddin's resignation.
