The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued guidelines to prevent the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that causes flu-like symptoms.
Released on Sunday and signed by Professor Dr. Md Halimur Rashid, the line director of the Communicable Disease Control Program, the directives focus on promoting personal hygiene and social distancing.
The guidelines recommend wearing masks, washing hands frequently with soap or using hand sanitizer for at least 20 seconds, and covering the nose and mouth with an arm or tissue when coughing or sneezing. Used tissues should be disposed of in covered bins immediately, followed by handwashing. The DGHS also suggests avoiding contact with infected individuals, maintaining a three-foot distance, and avoiding touching the face with unclean hands. Individuals experiencing symptoms like fever, cough, or shortness of breath should stay home until fully recovered. The DGHS emphasized that while HMPV causes mild respiratory symptoms that typically subside within 2–5 days, people should not panic but strictly follow health guidelines.
Healthcare facilities and entry points across Bangladesh have been instructed to strengthen health protocols. Medical colleges, district health offices, upazila health offices, and airports have been directed to implement necessary measures to prevent the virus's spread.
The notice pointed out that HMPV cases have risen significantly in countries like China and other South Asian nations. Children under 14, adults over 65, pregnant women, people with chronic conditions like asthma or COPD, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
