Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon, former Member of Parliament for the Habiganj-4 Constituency, has been remanded for five days by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court. This decision comes from his alleged involvement in the attempted murder of Jubo Dal leader Ridoy Mia during an anti-discrimination student movement in Mirpur. Ridoy Mia, the case's plaintiff, accused Sumon of shooting him during the assembly on July 19, which involved clashes with ruling party affiliates.
Despite police requesting a ten-day remand, the court favored a shorter duration. Sumon was arrested in the Mirpur-6 area shortly after he announced on social media, "I am going with the police. See you in court. Pray for me." In a video before his arrest, he insisted on his innocence, indicating that he remained in Bangladesh since August 5, solely staying undercover for safety reasons. He has promised to address the accusations legally.
