In the case of the murder of university student Hriday Chandra Tarua during the anti-discrimination student movement in Chattogram, one of the accused is Jubo League activist HM Mithu. His image, showing him at the scene with a firearm, circulated on social media. On Monday, RAB (Rapid Action Battalion) issued a press release stating that the armed Jubo League activist and leader of a teenage gang had been arrested. However, after being handed over to the police, they verified and confirmed that the person arrested by RAB was not HM Mithu. Instead, he was Kazi Zahidul Alam, alias Mitu, a tree trader by profession, with no prior cases filed against him at the police station.

Kazi Zahidul Alam's home is in the Paschim Mohora area of Chattogram’s Chandgaon police station. He runs a tree business in a shop located at the Kaptai Road intersection. RAB-7's media officer, Kazi Sharif Ul Alam, signed and sent a press release to various media outlets today, stating that based on confidential information, HM Mithu, an accused in the murder case of Chattogram University student Hriday Chandra Tarua and a teenage gang leader, was arrested last night from the Kaptai Road intersection. On July 18, Hriday was injured by gunfire from the accused and his associates in the Muradpur area, and he died on July 23 in Dhaka while undergoing treatment. Following this incident, Hriday's friend Azizul Haque filed a case with Chandgaon Police Station, where HM Mithu was named as an accused.

According to the police, HM Mithu is known to be an associate of Nurul Azim Roni, former General Secretary of the Chattogram City Chhatra League, and he has more than 14 cases filed against him. RAB identified the arrested Kazi Zahidul Alam as HM Mithu and handed him over to the police. However, after verifying, the police discovered that he was not the real accused. Later, the police confirmed that the image of the person arrested did not match the actual appearance of HM Mithu.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aftab Uddin of Chandgaon Police Station said that after verification, it was confirmed that the person arrested by RAB was not the actual armed HM Mithu, and he had no prior cases against him. He was not involved in any political activities either. As a result, he was not sent to court for the Hriday murder case. However, he was presented in court as a suspect in an old case involving the assault of a businessman, although it is expected that he will be cleared after the investigation.

OC Aftab Uddin stated, "RAB gave him to us, and we have shown him as arrested. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the actual accused, HM Mithu."

Court sources revealed that Kazi Zahidul Alam was presented before Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Alamgir Hossain in the afternoon, where his lawyer stated that his name was not mentioned in the case, and he had no prior cases. The court later granted him bail.

After being granted bail, Kazi Zahidul Alam said, "RAB took me away; I didn't understand anything. Despite my repeated claims, they handed me over to the police, labeling me as an armed criminal. My picture was also circulated in the media. I demand a proper investigation into this incident."

Akhtar Kabir Chowdhury, the Chattogram secretary of Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SUJAN), said that it should be investigated whether there was any plot to protect the real accused by arresting an innocent person.
