"2,000 people did not give their lives just for elections. 16 years of corrupt systems marginalized public life," said Sarjis Alam, general secretary of the July Martyr Smriti Foundation and coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement. He made this comment in response to the questions of the journalists after distributing the check of financial donation to the family members of the martyrs in the movement at the Sylhet District Commissioner's office on Saturday (October 9).
He also said, "We are not saying that everything should be reformed in one year. But a logical time is needed to reform the systems that have been destroyed in 16 years. Especially without reforming the Election Commission, fair elections are impossible."
Sarjis Alam added, "Bangladesh constitution is yet to present a real people's government to the people. Big manifestoes are given before every election but are forgotten after coming to power. Some fascist cronies in the High Court also need to be removed."
